Cover Letter (Western version of the autobiography)
also known as C.V., or curriculum vitae (important background)
In western culture the equivalent to the autobiography is the cover letter. There are many differences. The cover letter is intended to make your application more personal and hopefully give the potential employer a good feeling about you while remaining professional. Keep it short, one page should be enough and avoid repetition or big words. It should be formal (no numbers (one not 1) or slang). Write only information that is important to the position you are applying for. You do not need to talk about your past or your family. Never state weaknesses or inabilities. Try not to be too aggressive or too humble. It should be written in full sentences. Computer print on A4 paper with the name of the person you want to address at the top left of the paper.
State your name and something about your personality. Also include you characteristics (strengths). This can be your first paragraph. Next, write briefly about the skills you have aquired from (school and) work. List experiences that are important. For the final paragraph, make it clear that you are capable and can contribute to the company. Let the person you are addressing know your intention (to call or set up an interview). Thank them for the opportunity. Sign your name by hand and type it so they can clearly read it.
Be enthusiastic. It is extremely important that you write in your own words. This point is true for your resume, autobiography or cover letter. When you meet in person, you want the employer to see that your level of spoken English is similar to your written ability. You might consider showing some knowledge of the industry in particular the company you are applying for. Where possible use words related to the job (ex. for teaching – “ experience planning course curriculum integrating student special needs”) If you are concerned about the format there are many books that may be useful, such as Resumes for Dummies and Cover Letters for Dummies. Useful websites are www.jobstar.org and www.nextsteps.org . Do not mention money unless you have been asked to.
Proofread your letter for grammar and spelling mistakes. Keep a copy, but give an original with your signature in pen.
